This research aims to synthesise a series of sulfur-nitrogen radicals referred to as dithiazolyls. The main objective is to look at the cooperative behaviour which is likely to exist between the unpaired electrons on each molecule. Manipulation of the solid state structure should allow the communication between radicals to be modified leading to a variety of molecular materials exhibiting short range (one or two-dimensional) or long range (three-dimensional) magnetic order. In addition, the possibility of switching their magnetic behaviour through the phenomena of bistability (a compound which can exist in two interconvertible forms at the same temperature) will also be examined. This process focuses on the potential for regular n-stacked dithiazolylradicals to distort to a dimeric n-stacked motif with concomitant switching of its magnetic response from paramagnetic to diamagnetic.The programme is primarily synthetic in nature. Structural studies will be carried out in-house . Additional characterisation of materials properties will be via a series of collaborations which are already on-going.
