Summary on Grant Application Form
Considerable efforts have been made in the past decade targetted at fundamental research on vision-based inspection using artificial intelligence ; neural networks. Success has been achieved for a limited range of applications (e.g. typically wood boards). Although various techniques have be developed, there are still important problems and furthermore, techniques are yet to be developed to extend the application domain. With an existing collaborative link between the University of Luton and the Shenyang University of Architecture and Civil Engineering in China, a si; month visiting fellowship is proposed to enable Professor Chengdong Wu from Shenyang to participate in the work at Luton. An experienced and t skilled academic, Professor Wu has previously visited the UK on a number of occasions. The project will enhance Luton's expertise in artificial intelligence and neural networks, especially for vision-based inspection utilising Professor Wu's work. It is expected that a joint project will be explc with UK industry to further develop and apply the techniques to an extended range of products, i.e. building materials such as ceramic and wooden tiles for which there has been little reported research. Specific efforts will be made on real-time and optimisation algorithms for image segmentatio neural network training.
