Transition metal hydroxides (TMHs) are novel, promising catalysts for liquid-phase oxidation under mild conditions. This proposal sets out an investigation into catalysis by TMHs for selective oxidation of organic compounds with O2, HZOz or tertbutyl hydroperoxide in liquid phase. Nanosized colloid TMH systems as well as bulk and supported TMHs, both monometal and mixed-metal, will be studied. The hydroxides of Cu, Fe, Co, Mn, Ru and Pd will be the catalysts of choice. High throughput catalyst preparation and testing techniques will be used for the accelerated catalyst design. Among the targets are several practically important reactions relevant to bulk and fine chemicals synthesis including the oxidation of cycloalkanes to cycloalkanols and cycloalkanones and of alcohols to aldehydes or ketones. As the oxidation catalysts, TMHs will have the advantages such as easy preparation and modification, high stability in strong oxidising media, low leaching, and easy separation and reuse.
