This project will focus on the creation of multi-component and thereby potentially multi-functional, supramolecular systems with a high degree of complexity using carboranes, noting that carboranes have applications in chemical, medical, environmental and materials science. In particular the project will investigate the use of carboranes in crystal engineered systems, that is crystalline materials where molecular components are assembled into arrays with infinite structures such as chains, helices, grids and 3D networks through supramolecular interactions. Carboranes may be exploited in this context through (i) their hydrogen bonding capabilities, noting that the acidic C-H groups are known to act as hydrogen bond donors to classical ' acceptor groups (O, F, N) and form non-classical interactions to aromatic rings as well as dihydrogen bonds; (ii) as templating molecules or counterions for coordination polymers or hydrogen bonded networks, the large size of carboranes is likely to encourage open network structures which can have interesting sorption properties leading to applications in separations, catalysis, etc; (Iii) the formation of secondary supramolecular structure such as packing of spherical carboranes into polyhedral prisms and host-guest interactions to form ball-and-socket nano-structures. Study of the host-guest chemistry of carboranes will be a secondary aim. The project will establish new classes of compounds of interest to the general scientific community.
