Summary on Grant Application Form
A research programme to investigate the fluid mechanical effects of periodic optical dipole forces on atomic and molecular gases in hollow optical fibres is proposed. This work will measure the effects of a light force pump, created by the conservative optical dipole force of a travelling optical lattice, which induces drift in single and multi-component gases within a hollow optical fibre. This programme will investigate differential pressures induced in a single species gas, and separation of species with multi-component gas mixtures. This would be the first observation of these effects, and also of optical Landau damping. The results of this research may find application to the separation of atomic or polar molecular species within a gas mixture, based on the relative optical force on each, with the potential for use in chemical analysis.
