Summary on Grant Application Form
The research covers a wide range of phenomena and will be of interest to theoreticians (applied mathematicians and physicists) and to experimentalists alike. Although we concentrate our research on phenomena that have been observed in experiments on binary fluid convection, this system serves as a paradigm for studying the evolution of doubly diffusive and other oscillatory instabilities. Our research will therefore be of significance in a variety of other contexts. In particular the idea that the presence of near-degenerate modes is responsible for bursting behaviour near onset could have wide applicability in the physical and engineering sciences. In addition the research will shed light on the interaction between nonlinear waves and boundaries in driven dissipative systems. Our systematic approach will therefore yield results applicable to many fields including mechanical engineering, reaction-diffusion systems in chemistry, shear flow instabilities, electroconvection and dynamo theory.
