Nonequillibrium statistical mechanics is of relevance to many systems including those driven into a steady state far from thermal equilibrium and those, such as glasses, relaxing slowly into equilibrium. Driven models have been shown to exhibit phenomena not seen in their equilibrium- counterparts, for example, nonequilibrium phase transitions. We aim to deepen our understanding of these novel phase transitions through detailed analysis, both by numerical and analytical means, of specific models that exhibit spontaneous symmetry breaking and condensation transitions. Clear results for these models will allow them to be paradigms with which to compare other model systems. The understanding of glassy systems, relaxing slowly to equilibrium has recently been enhanced by ideas, such as that of effective temperature, coming from the study of mean-field-like models. We shall test these ideas, again through the study of specific models, to see whether they hold good in simple glassy models with local dynamics.
