The Grid has been recognised internationally as being important for enabling the effective use of large scientific information and analysis resources, for example in Physics, Astronomy, Meteorology and Biology. It offers the vision of users running high-performance analyses of information drawn from a set of distributed repositories. However, most work to date on The Grid has focused on the provision of low-level services for data access, metadata description, authorisation, resource reservation, performance measurement and instrumentation. Indeed, although Grid architectures show considerable potential for supporting high performance distributed applications, there has been surprisingly little attention given to the development of high level programming interfaces on top of these lower level facilities. Therefore, the aim of this research is to develop for the Grid a high-level, object-oriented query language and its associated optimisation and evaluation infrastructure. A key feature is that it will support the dynamic revision of initial execution plans in the light of run-time information- static plan generation is fraught with difficulties for the Grid as there may be limited statistics available to support planning, and the availability of computational resources may change significantly during run-time. The project will extend our current research on parallel query processing for object databases to support efficient declarative access to distibuted Grid resources. It will also adapt and extend recent work on dynamic query processing.
