The topic of the proposed research is the computational modelling of the aero-elastic behaviour of bridges, a multi-physics problem for which an efficient and reliable computational model has yet to be developed. The aim of the proposed research is to improve the computational modelling of bridge aero-elasticity by comparing computational and experimental results.First, code will be written to link commercially available fluid dynamics and structural solvers. The use of the finite volume and finite element methods to model the fluid domain will be compared by considering the solution times and accuracy of results. Particular emphasis will be given to establishing whether modelling in 3 dimensions is necessary to replicate the aero-elastic behaviour, given the significant computational cost.Second, section model wind tunnel tests will be performed on a series of bluff bodies, both rigidly and elastically supported. The data collected (velocity and pressure, aerodynamic forces and structural response) will be compared with the results from the computational models and used to refine them.Third, comparisons will be made with full scale data collected during a previous monitoring exercise on Kessock Bridge.
