Summary on Grant Application Form
This research is to carry out a feasibility study of a system approach that will bring together the active steering of wheelset and traction control which interact at the wheel-rail contact points, and it is based upon a long term prospect where active wheelset control will be used for rail vehicles and an integrated control for the two sub-systems will then become inevitable in order to ensure the stability and performance of the system. The proposal is a fundamental study of the opportunities which arise from bringing those sub-systems together. It will develop a scientific understanding of the interactions, and apply new systems engineering techniques to develop an integrated system with optimised solutions for the provision of traction and braking in actively steered railway vehicles of the future. In addition to the control engineering and system integration issues, the research must also bring together all issues concerned with the wheelset steering and traction control, including the vehicle dynamics, the wheel-rail contact mechanics, the motor characteristics, the properties of the motor drives and transmission mechanics.
