Summary on Grant Application Form
Aided communication for non-speaking people which involves word-by-word generation of each utterence is too slow for effective communication. Two whole utterence-based approaches have achieved much faster conversation rates than word generation system ( ie, 40-60 compares to 5-15 words per minute ). Frametalker ( higginbotham & wilkins,1999 ) assists users to progress through a sequence of utterence frames in a specific context of communication where a particular topic or situatution is in focus, eg , eating a meal or task-directed activity at work.TALK ( todman, 2000) enables users to conduct a free ranging social conversation where the topic is not constrained by the situation, eg , general chat while eating ameal or at work. These two utterence-based approaches share a concern with the modeeling the pragmatics of conversation and address complementary aspects of the needs of potential users. The current project, together with a project in the USA, will integrate these approaches within a single system in year 1. In view of the barriers to non-speaking disabled people entering employment, the project will focus on office commuincation frame structuresand on the provision of socail chat frames, containing rapidly customize utterences ready for use without delay in offce and other environments. The developed system will be trailed in real office by real users in year 2.R
