Spraycasting is recieving global attention for Ai and other alloys where the homogeneous microstructur, near net shape and extended alloying capabilities offer economic & performance advantage.Niche Ai production markets have been established in Ai-Si alloys for automotive (peak, Germany) and electronic packaging (Osprey,UK) applications.The proposed research will draw on new facilities installed under the JIF and make use of expertise at 3 industrual concerns to devolop next generation air frame alloys. A PDRA at Oxford University will focus on the manufacture of spraycast 60-80kg billets and undertake microstructural characterisation. Dr Ian Palmer, a DERA Fellow based jointly at Farnbrough and Oxford will bring expertise in alloy devolopement and fundamentals of Al alloy physical metallurgy. A project studentship at Imperial College will focus on short and long term elevated temperature strength, microstructural stability and post exposure room temperature behaviour: while a project studentship at Southampton University will focus on fatigue behaviour,and also provide tensille abd toughnmess measurements for the overall materials developement programme. Small forgingswill be provided by DERA in the early stages of the project, while later stages larger industry standard forgings will be provided by BAE Systems and sub-contractors.This DARP programmes will deliver industrially focused, high quality scientific research to underpin future technology requirements, and well-trained researchers to promote knowledge transfer.
