The proposed research aims to investigate the viability of vegetable oil as the fuel for a novel steam reforming process.This process has a drastically lower energy demand for H2 production in comparison to conventional steam reforming processes, thereby allowing it to be small scale and at the same time economical. The process uses the principle of `unmixed combustion' in combination with a nickel impregnated calcium based catalyst. The fundamental difference in this type of combustion system is that the fuel and the oxidant streams are kept separate during the whole process. The role of the Ni-catalyst Ca mix is to shift the strongly endothermic and hence inefficient steam reforming reaction to a slightly exothermic one so that the process becomes autothermal (i.e. no external heating is needed) while maximising the H2 yield.This technique has recently been tested successfully with diesel fuel and additional benefits have been demonstrated such as the capture and separation of C02 as well as S02 (where the fuel contains S-species) independently to the production of hydrogen gas.
