Summary on Grant Application Form
Professor Walter Graf is perhaps the most recognised senior researcher in the field of fluvial Hydraulics in the world. He has published a number of books on the subject listed in the case for support. Professor Graf intends to come to the UK, and Glasgow in particular to conduct collaborative research in the field of sediment transport and flood hydraulics. The main thrust of his research will be a joint study with Prof. Enrine(Glasgow), Prof.Pender (Heriot-Watt), Dr.McEwan (Aberdeen) and Dr Shvidchenko/G.Klemm (both of Glasgow) on the role of coherent turbulent flow structures, near-bed turbulence and bed pressure fluctuations on the entrainment of sediment in a gravel-bed river. Prof.Graf will work closely with young researchers to develop new techniques to visualise three-dimensional flow structures, new techniques to measure pressure fluctuations in the gravel bed and explore ways to relate these to sediment motion. Prof Graf will run local workshops in sediment transport and also develop strong links with the research team at the University of Aberdeen. He intends to visit the UK for three separate one-month visits during the six month period.
