Summary on Grant Application Form
The novelty of this research proposal lies in the development of a methodology for characterising the complex modulus and micromechanical properties of thin viscoelastic films using the nanoindentor diagnostic. it will include characterisation of temperature/frequency dependent dynamic properties of thin film material, and nano and micro-mechanical properties of heterogeneous film morphology. The project will consist of the following stages. First, a measurement procedure of frequency/temperature dependent complex moduli will be established using a standard well-characterised material prepared as a thin film. The nanoindentor data will be verifeid by comparison with DMTA measurement of the same material in the bulk form. Second a range of polymeric films will be prepared using a plasma deposition technique developed already. Third, plasma viscoelastic films will be examined by nanoindentor withthe purpose of complex moduli measurement . Fourth, the heterogenous morphology of plasma films will be studied using high resolution positioning of the nanoindentor measurement tip.
