Several new families of pro-ligands will be synthesised and fully characterised; each of these molecules will contain a substituted phenol that is covalently linked to one or two N-donor groups. The majority of these ligands will involve steric hindrance, both to restrict the co-ordination number and control access to the metal centre and, by substitution of the phenol at the ortho- and pare-positions, to inhibit decomposition pathways of the phenoxyl radical. These new ligands will be complexed to a variety of metals, including Cu, Zn, Cr, Mo, W, V, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Ga, and Sc, and the resultant completes will be fully characterised. The redcx: properties of the complexes will be defined and the molecular structure of representative examples will be determined by X-ray crystallography. The electronic structure of these compounds, especially for the states that involve radical ligands, will be probed by UV/vis/NIR, EPR, MCD, metal K-edge XAS, and resonance Raman spectroscopies and SQUID magnetometry. The results of these physical measurements will be interpreted using density functional and other theoretical calculations. The chemical reactivity of the new systems will be explored, especially as these systems are potential chemical analogues of the catalytic centres of enzymes that involve a tyrosinyl ligand.
