Summary on Grant Application Form
The movement of dissolved substances, called the flux, by diffusion in fine soft sediments (i.e., muds) is impeded by the presence of the solid mud particles i.e. the solutes cannot move through the solids The numerical magnitude of this hindrance is called the tortuosity. The applicant has previously established by analyzing data, a relationship between the tortuosity and the volume fraction of water in muds, i.e., the porosity, without being able to explain the reason for this relationship. Furthermore, all existing theories cannot explain this relationship. The research thus involves identification, using computer models, of how particles in muds are stacked to produce the observed relationship. The results will be useful because calculation of flux in muds is common when dealing with environmental problems and oil industry research. Measurements of tortuosity are also extremely difficult, and a good theory would greatly profit all concerned with these calculations.
