It is proposed to integrate the activities of two leading UK research groups, led by Professor Adrian Saul at the University of Sheffield and Professor Richard Ashley at the University of Bradford, to create a international centre to promote leading research into the performance, operation and management of potable water and wastewater systems. The retention of key, experienced, existing research staff is essential to ensure the success of the centre. The centre's main objective is to develop the tools required by engineering practioners, and other decision makers, to improve the management of water infrastructure assets to the levels that will be required by emerging regulatory frameworks and the demands of stakeholders. As well as issues of asset management (operation and rehabilitation) and appropriate service level definition there are a number of uncertainties regarding the detailed technical performance of existing assets and likely future approaches to the design and operation of new water infrastructure. The new Centre aims to address these problems by working across the water/wastewater areas with a synergistic approach utilising field studies, pilot scale facilities, laboratory facilities and computational modelling. Under the overall umbrella of the 'management of water/wastewater asset performance'; studies will include aspects of: sources and inputs; in-system processes; outlets and interactions. A significant element of the new Centre's activity will be to span the pertinent engineering, technical, scientific, economic and social areas.
