The proposed research extends the recent development of combining total scattering methods and Reverse Monte Carlo analysis for studies of crystalline materials. The experimental developments will be to include synchrotron X-ray data and to develop methods for high-pressure measurements. The main analysis developments will be to develop methods to extract information about phonon dispersion curves. Other analysis developments are to include site-occupancy and magnetic disorder. One other area is to be able to use the methods to obtain crystal structures of low-temperature phases following a phase transition when small distortions are difficult to detect by conventional diffraction techniques. The new methods have a range of applications, including high-pressure, structural and magnetic phase transitions, and lattice dynamics. Additionally, they are timely in view of the development of the DIAMOND synchrotron source.
