Summary on Grant Application Form
In this project, which looks to extend on work completed in a previous EPSRC-funded programme (GR/L40106), we will prepare novel inorganic-organic building blocks with architectures similar to the secondary building units present in zeolites and other microporous materials. These will then be linked together, using coordination polymer techniques, to form new types of microporous solid. By carefully designing the topology and organic functionality of the molecular building blocks we expect the solids to be thermally robust, and will therefore have potential applications in host-guest chemistry. The project is designed in four tasks, each one with the purpose of attaining the objectives set out above. The synthetic methods are based on well-known chemistry, with which we ham a great deal of experience, and we believe have a high probability for success. While being structurally related to zeolites, the presence of the organic linking groups will mean that they will have markedly different chenoselective properties to currently available microporous materials.
