Summary on Grant Application Form
Over the past few years several theoretical studies have been carried out at Heriot-Watt University to investigate the behaviour of fires in tunnels. A number of experimental studies have also been carried out elsewhere. This project will create a preliminary computer model, combining the results of three of the theoretical studies with experimetal data, to predict the maximum heat release rate (fire size) of a HGV fire in a tunnel and the probability of the fire spreading to an adjacent HGV, for a range of longitudinal ventilation velocities. The preliminary model will concern itself only with a tunnel the shape and size of the Channel Tunnel. A Java applet of the model will be developed which will be made available to interested parties on the internet.
