The alms of the research are to develop an analysis methodology for the analysis of functional magnetic imaging data from event related studies Investigating the modulatory influences of different brain regions on one another. The research will build a model of the haemodynamic response to neural activation that can be used to explore different analysis strategies. The model will include nonlinearities both at the neural level and in the interactions between changes in blood flow and changes in hemoglobin oxygenation that produce the fMRI signal. Data from OIS and fMRI studies will be used to refine and validate the model. Nonlinear frequency response functions will be computed to provide a complimentary analysis to the time domain modeling studies, to reveal the invariant characteristics which define the energy transfer properties of the system, and to relate these to the terms in the nonlinear time domain model. Simulated data sets will be generated using the rapid stimulation presentation protocols (as in event related studies) and with the modulatory effects of different stimulus onset lags, duration and inter-stimulus intervals. This data will be used to explore different analysis methods leading to a better understanding of processing interactions at the neuronal level from measurements obtained using optical and functional magnetic resonance imaging studies. The final objective of the research will be to compare the methods on real fMRI data.
