Summary on Grant Application Form
The work proposed here builds upon the success of a recent two-year ROPA project in which an assessment has been made of the use of DNS turbulence databases in the context of a reformulation of the theory of sound production. The proposed continuation of this work applies the methods to a more practical configuration, namely the plane jet. An existing parallel code will be applied to a geometry that will, crucially, include the trailing edge of the upstream nozzle. Databases of relevant acoustic quantities as a function of time will be stored. Post-processing by Fourier transformation, following an extension of the previous method, will provide information on acoustic sources in the low-Mach number limit. Use of a different Ffowcs Williams/Hawkings (FW-H) surface will allow the acoustic far field prediction to be checked. The final part of the project will test large-eddy simulation, with a model for sub-grid scale stresses, for its ability to predict sound field. If, as is expected, the sound field is governed predominantly by the large scales of turbulence, it will be possible to extend such simulations to higher Reynolds numbers than are feasible by direct numerical simulation.
