Adsorption cycle refrigerators and heat pumps are able to cool and heat driven by heat input from either a fuel or waste heat. They have the potential to dramatically reduce the C02 emissions required by conventional systems. Previous work at Warwick and elsewhere has concentrated on improving the heat transfer in and out of adsorbent beds, in order firstly to reduce the size and cost and secondly to improve regeneration and energy efficiency. Research has been focussed on complete engineering systems or components. The adsorbents used may have been fabricated into particular forms but the sorption properties are those of commercially available types. This, more fundamental, research will explore hybrid adsorbents. These consist of an active carbon base material, impregnated with micron or sub-micron crystals of metallic salts such as Calcium Chloride, Strontium Chloride etc. These chemically absorb the ammonia refrigerant in large quantities but have slower reaction rates than the carbon adsorption. We intend to study both the equilibrium and dynamics of hybrids with one or a combination of several salts, understand their behaviour and model their use in different types of cycle. Finally we will propose and evaluate new formulations of sorbent that will result in significantly more compact and higher efficiency machines.
