Solid materials with porous structure are important to the mechanical and the aeronautical industries. It is proposed that the structural dynamics of cellular solids be studied by the use of computational and analytical models as well as vibration experiments. Small amplitude linear motion will be studied. Effective medium theories will be examined in the light of dynamic behaviour of cellular solids. Comparisons with static elastic properties will be made. The expected transition of behaviour from continuum to heterogeneous material, as the wave-number increases, will be characterised. Numerical experiments on an ensemble of geometries followed by analysis will constitute the main methodology of the proposed work. It is an aim of the proposed work to statistically predict the macroscopic dynamic properties on the basis of the statistical description of the cellular geometry. Two-dimensional geometries will be studied initially. Guided by the understanding gained from the two-dimensional investigation, three dimensional work will be carried out. Finally, laboratory experiments will be used to measure vibration characteristics of the cellular solids at the macroscopic level. The main beneficiaries of the work are in the aeronautical, sports equipment and biomechanical industries. The computational and the theoretical work will be carried out by a PhD student.
