Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposal seeks to explore the potential of optical fibre Bragg grating lasers as acoustic wave (AW) sensors to monitor real time structural integrity based on acousto-ultrasonic or acoustic emission systems. DFB and DBR fibre laser cavities with typical gauge lengths of 2-Scm will be employed. The sensitivity of the cavity to acoustic emission signals in the range IOOkHz to IMHz will be investigated and compared with that of a conventional piezoelectric transducer. The possibility of directional discrimination will be explored. Sensor multiplexing will be addressed with up to three sensors experimentally investigated. This would allow a number of sensors to be positioned along a single fibre as well as the potential implementation as strain rosettes. Factors influencing sensor sensitivity and fidelity such as sensor/host interface coupling and mean strain and noise levels in the structure will be explored to confirm the practical viability of the technique outside the optics laboratory.
