|
XML (the eXtensible Markup Language) has become a new standard for data representation and exchange on the internet. Many major commercial organisations have indicated a commitment to using and supporting the development of XML. Increasingly, large volumes of information will become available in the form of XML documents on the web. Efficiently managing these collections will become a critical issue to both information providers and consumers.While much work has addressed the storage and manipulation of XML data, little has sought to exploit the specific features of the XML format in providing efficient storage and access for such documents. This project will study the techniques required to manage a large number of XML documents in a single database, in particular, the following issues: physical organisation of a large number of XML documents whose contents are logically related; access methods and indexing mechanisms for such an XML document repository; and query processing and optimisation techniques that can efficiently support various types of queries and updates to the stored XML documents.The research findings will be implemented in a prototype XML document management system, XBase.
