Sustainable Development is a network of Sustainable Processing Routes, or ways of doing things (Boron, Murray,2000)We should like to explore this concept, through the network of academic colleagues listed, supported be key companies who have already established EMAS /ISO accreditation portfolios (letters attached), and through collaboration with other like-minded practitioners in the field (SIGMA), attempt to develop the concept into a practical, transparent and simple methodology which can be incorporated into existing Environmental Management Systems, (EMS's).Because of the regional character (Scotland), some of our dominant market sectors have been selected, ie :- paper pulp, alcoholic beverages and power generation from fossil fuels.(Boron, Murray, submitted paper,2001 b)These would be subjected to closer scrutiny while developing complimentary analysis for other industries.We will compare the constraints being imposed on these market sectors as far as Sustainable Development Strategies are concerned and establish whether the ethos that controls them is the same.The economic filters can then be drawn down and compared. (Moffatt) We will then set up LCA's against clearly defined SD goals and scope definitions (Cliff /Azapagic) and introduce risk assessment and thereby the precautionary principle into sustainable business practice
