Recently, the Heriot-Watt MBE group has developed a technique which allows metal sulphides, that would normally grow in the rocksalt crystal structure, to be grown instead in the zincblende crystal structure. This technique has been sucessfuly applied to magnesium sulphide. Here, in this one year feasibility study we aim to determine if the technique can be applied to manganese sulphide which can be grown lattice matched to GaAs.The growth of thick layers of MnS lattice matched to GaAs would provide new insights into details of the growth method and provide information about the basic physical properties of zincblende MnS which are still not known with certainty.We would also grow a series of low strain ZnSe/MnS and MnS/MgS heterostructures on GaAs. Structural and optical measurements of these layers would provide information on the quality of MnS when incorporated in heterostructures. They would also provide information on the suitability of MnS for a more detailed study of its use in structures for spintronics.
