Summary on Grant Application Form
We will pioneer auto-optimising highly scalable index frameworks for very large collections of reference data, such as multiple mammalian genomes. Our novel approach combines three engineering techniques and automatically adjusts their parameters in response to changes in data set, workload and computational platform. A breakthrough is possible because of the relative stability of reference data, the properties of indexes and workloads, and because of new techniques for dynamic optimisation supported by standard Java interfaces. We will meet simultaneously three critical goals: Tuning parameters will be set automatically. Wide variations of index and usage will be accommodated. Large indexes (e.g. multiple mammalian genomes totalling 101 elements) will have unprecedented performance.
