Summary on Grant Application Form
Radar imaging systems have been developed to provide the flight crew with a visible image during the landing phase, In conditions where the aircraft would need to divert unless the aircraft and runway were both fitted with the highest category of auto-land facilities. The image is projected in the HeadUp Display (HUD) to enable the flight crew to continue an approach beyond the normal minima. Even so, the image may contain radar clutter, making it different for the flight crew to distinguish airfield features, particularly runways and taxiways. This proposal is to investigate techniques to enhance radar imaging by detecting airfield features In the image in real-time, so that the runway can be tracked and displayed during an approach. The proposed method is based on knowledge of the airfield dimensions, combined with aircraft position and attitude to use sensor fusion methods to aid the tracking algorithms and also to provide integrity monitoring. A real-time image detection system will be developed to locate the vertices of major airfield features. The programme of research includes simulation of a radar receiver, development of the tracking and integrity monitoring algorithms and simulatorbased flight trials to validate this approach to enhanced vision.
