Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposal represents a small-scale feasibility study and undertakes the development of a sensor system that can be retrofitted into the cover-zone of existing reinforced concrete structures, thereby allowing real time monitoring of ionic movement within the concrete. The research programme will exploit the use of electrical measurements (both fixed and variable frequency) taken between electrodes on 'paired-sensors' to obtain impedance profiles through the covercrete. Interpretational developments, undertaken within the programme, would exploit impedance profiles as a means of evaluating the performance and protective qualities of the covercrete (eg. chloride penetration, long term hydration effects). The developmental programme of work will comprise both laboratory and field studies. The sensor system and testing methodology would, eventually, assist in the development of performance based durability criteria.
