Summary on Grant Application Form
The project is a three year part-time research programme by the principal investigator to investigate the transient flow structures present in the fountain flow field created by twin impinging jets. Currently, only very limited transient data are available on the upwash fountain particularly for highspeed compressible jet flows. This project aims to use the laser-based flow diagnostic measurement techniques of PIV and LDA together with highspeed flow visualisation to analyse this flow field. The Department currently has a 2-D PIV system but it is limited to a frequency of 15Hz. Although this is thought to be sufficient to capture the main features of the flow field, analysi?; at higher frequencies would not be possible. The initial stage of this research project would, therefore, also include the set-up of a high-speed (1 kHz) digital flow visualisation system to aid analysis.A range of realistic flow conditions and jet geometries will be investigated for the twin-jet configuration where the results are aimed primarily at improving STOVL aircraft design.
