Summary on Grant Application Form
The main thrust of the programme is to develop a commercially viable process for producing enhanced GB properties in 123 C CS. We will pursure two very novel processing routes for GBJc optimisation.1. Selective Ca doping of Y13a,Cu;07_, (123) CC GBs through deposition and subsequent heat treatment of surface gels, or via diffusion from a suitable buffer layer. Such selective doping will prevent the reduction in Tc by global doping2. Global Ca doping in Y2Ba4CU8Ox (248). For the 248 phase (also commonly referred to as the 124 phase), Ca doping increases T2 from 80k to 90k. Hence there is no need for selective doping.Supporting and exploratory science will be undertaken in the form of growth, doping and characterisation of bicrystal films. For exploration of alternntive'dopants to Ca, L,PE coating of bicrystals using doped fluxes will be undertaken. Finally. a robust prototype system for continuous doping/ annealing of CC tapes will be developed.
