Summary on Grant Application Form
It is proposed to investigate the feasibility of using a new thin-film technology to enhance the performance of computer hard disk drives. The project aims to improve the performance of the writing head by including conducting thin films to change the shape of the recording field at high frequency. The recording resolution will be enhanced making it possible to store much more information (e.g. by 5 to 10 times) in new perpendicular recording magnetic thin films on computer disks which operate below the superparamagnetic limit. The feasibility study will be carried out by an experienced team of researchers who have published widely in magnetic recording. It will essentially involve computational modelling to predict the performance of a range of advanced designs, and to reach conclusions about the optimum designs to achieve maximum performance. If the anticpated significant performance gains can be demonstrated theoretically, it is intended to apply for another grant to implement the designs in experimental prototypes.
