Summary on Grant Application Form
This application is designed to support research activity arising from the MILLE, MILLE/FT and MILLE/FT2 projects as well as on-going work on the EMILLE project. This previous work has demonstrated that Indian languages are poorly served with language engineering resources - both in general terms (provision of word-processing software etc) and specifically with respect to corpus building work. EMILLE was established to overcome some of these problems, yet as EMILLE develops resources to enable language engineering in these languages, the need grows to facilitate the establishment of research projects and programmes to actually use the data being created. The goals of MILLEWS are therefore to bring both UK and South Asian academics together to establish a clear consensus on the current state of the art in indic language processing, and to map out future directions for language engineering research in these languages. If MILLEWS can achieve this substantial goal, the output of EMILLE should find a well informed set of consumers both in the UK and India who are both prepared and capable of using the resources produced to meet research objectives of clear importance.
