The aim of this proposal is to expand on a recently formed collaboration between the Melville Laboratory (Cambridge) and the School of Chemical Engineering (Birmingham) to combine the expertise in polymer and small molecule synthesis developed in Cambridge with the extensive experience processing and extraction in compressed and supercritical carbon dioxide in Birmingham. Basic science will involve establishing protocols for solubility measurements, stirred batch reactors, pre-mixing and separation techniques, filtration, GAS and RESS methodology and on-line SFC analysis in Birmingham. In Cambridge a portfolio of synthetic reactions will be exploited. These range from the development of encapsulated reagents to solid supported reagents, homogeneous catalysis, cycloaddition and ring closing metathesis. The aim is to establish the added value of carbon dioxide solvent as a in its own right as well as to demonstrate the environmental advantages (clean technology) of its use as a green solvent . The goal will be to use batch methods and separations to demonstrate by proof of principle the potential to turn at least one of the synthetic steps into a continuous flow process.
