|
This project will be concerned with the rational design and synthesis of a first generation Lewis acid that can discriminate between the prochiral faces of a, b-unsaturated carbonyl compunds. The concept of the Lewis acids presented is to introduce two points of interaction between the lewis acid and the carbonyl compund. Namely, the usual sigma interaction between carbonyl and metal, and an attractive pi-pi interaction between the double bond of the a, b- unsaturated carbonyl compund and an aromatic ring incorporated in the structure of the ligand. The project will initally involve the systhesis of a new family of ligands, an investigation into hteir complexation to a series of lewis acidic metals and a systematic study of their catalytic propoerties. The aim of the project is two fold. Firstly, to use our ligands to understand the nature of face to face pi-pi interactions and the subtleties involved in their existence, and secondly, to use these ligands as catalysts in a series of asymmetric transformations.
