Summary on Grant Application Form
There is a need for efficient mid-IR LEDs, lasers and detectors which can operate at room temperature and at specific wavelengths, however there are as yet no reliable commercial suppliers of such components. By working in close collaboration with the industrial partners we aim to establish a UK source of mid-ir devices through solving a number of development issues to ensure reliable epitaxy, processing, packaging & lifetime. We shall also undertake research to further improve optical out-coupling and increase output power. A miniature folded path toxic gas sensor will be designed, developed and tested. A 2-5pm prototype solid state black body source will also be constructed and evaluated as a technology demonstrator to prepare the methodology for a similar source operating at 6-10pm for on-line fingerprint monitoring of liquids. The outcome will result in a new range of infrared gas sensors in the medium-longer term based on industrial innovation once the basic enabling scientific research & development has been carried out. A commercial spin-off company will be established at Lancaster to manufacture the required components at the end of the project.
