Summary on Grant Application Form
We intend to thoroughly investigate the kinetics (and hence mechanistic details) of a number of rapid radical polymerizations carried out in novel spinning c reactors (SDRs) developed in the Process Intensification and Innovation Centre at the University of Newcastle. The polymerizations to be studied will be thermally initiated polymerizations of styrene, methyl methacrylate and vinyl acetate. In studying kinetics of these polymerizations, we expect to be able to explain the reasons why it is possible to achieve such high rates of polymerization in these SDRs whilst still maintaining control of reaction exotherms, molecular weights and molecular weight distributions. We hope also to be able to determine whether or not carrying out radical polymerizations in SDRs ha any influence upon polymer stereochemistry and chain branching. A better understanding of the kinetics of these polymerizations will ultimately better enab the exploitation of spinning disc reactors in industrial polymerization processes (an area which has already generated significant industrial interest) with consequent financial and environmental benefits.
