The transfer of excitation energy between molecules is technologically important but surprisingly it is rather poorly understood. We propose a series of experiments to explore this fascinating topic, improving our knowledge of the underlying physics and assisting technological exploitation. We will investigate how transfer may be controlled by placing the molecules in an optical microcavity. In particular we will look at transfer in which an excited donor molecule decays to so as to populate a microcavity mode, this mode subsequently being absorbed by a second acceptor molecule - the microcavity mode thus mediating the transfer. Microcavities have been very successfully used to control spontaneous emission. Here we are curious about the extent to which the transfer process may similarly be controlled. In addition to employing planar microcavities, we will also investigate how periodic microstructure may be used to further the control of energy transfer. Our project will thus open a new exploration into the use of photonic materials.
