Summary on Grant Application Form
The research programme will investigate the application of Pulsed Power Technology to the plasma generation of High Power Ultrasound (HPU) pulses in water. The highly attractive properties of HPU pulses, namely high bandwidth and signal strength, can substantially advance the field of highdefinition, sonar generation technology. In addition, the strong shock-wave properties of these pulses can be employed in a number of environmental applications, such as the cleaning of pipelines and structural fouling, as well as in metal forming, cold jointing and plasma drilling processes. The initial phase of the research programme will determine the fundamental processes involved in the generation of HPU. This will be accomplished through a literature review and an experimental programme, in which measurements of the electrical and acoustic aspects of HPU generation will be performed and interrelated. The second phase of the programme will utilise the information gained to design and test HPU sources to compare experimental performance with prediction. This phase will be carried out iteratively. The third and final phase of the programme will optimise the design of. HPU sources for particular applications including compact, wideband sonar generators.
