The proposed research aims to design and construct a novel gasifier utilising ultra-superheated steam to gasify coal. Both tunnel and variable swirl burners will be constructed. The burner flame characteristics from a number of different UK and world-traded coals in synthetic air (oxygen-steam mixture) will be examined. The oxygen-free flue gases, the ultra-superheated steam, will be used as a gasification medium. Emissions of oxygen and carbon monoxide from the gasifier will be measured to determine the gasification efficiency. CFD codes will be used to model the flame and the gasifier. An economic evaluation will be carried out to investigate the feasibility of incorating the gasification unit into a waste incineration plant to utilise the steam generated and increase the efficiency of the plant. A database containing the results from all gasification experiments with different coals will be produced. This is a form of cleaner coal technology which will be environmentally beneficial through emissions reductions. If implemented, the results from this project would be a step towards developing the sustainable cities of the future by improved and cleaner energy production.
