Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed collaborative research project involves the development and testing of an instrumented total knee prosthesis capable of measuring the forces at the knee joint. The project has three phases: remaining development work and production; implant assembly, calibration, implantation, basic gait analysis, and patient follow-up; and further follow-up, advanced gait analysis, and lower limb modelling. Oxford is involved in the final phase. First, motion, force, and muscle activity data will be collected on patients performing walking, isometric exercises, chair rising, and stair climbing in a gait laboratory. An existing 31) model of the normal lower limb will be adapted to take into account the knee prosthesis, and along with the patient gait data, it will be used to analyse the forces in the anatomic structures of the lower limb. Results will be compared with the force data telemetered from the kne prosthesis.
