The new technique of infrarted flow linear dichroism (IRFLD) will be developed to detarmine relative orientations of biologicdal macromolecules and their substrates or environments. This will achive the advantages of UV - visible FLD without the disadvantage of scattering and the need for UV-visible chromophores. Challanges with IR include: high concentrations, small pathlengths, water absorbance, and less-robust transparent materials We believe these problems can now be overcome. IRFLD will be tested on our metallohelicate/DNA systems where IR is the simplest means of confirming non-backbone binding. Flow orienting thylakoid membrane proteins in lipid bicelles is also proposed together with a range of other applications.
