Stochastic resonance (SR), a phenomenon by which the perceptibility of barely subliminal signals is enhanced by the addition of noise, has been thoroughly explored by the theoretical physics community and, more recently, has been documented in many species and a variety of sensory modalities. Most of these studies demonstrate merely that SR can occur in sensory transduction, but do little to address the more interesting question whether t plays any important role.We propose to address this question in human vision, an area where SR is largely unexplored, save for a few reports on a detection task at the earliest stages of visual processing. We will extend this work both theoretically and experimentally, by studying a larger class of noise processes including both time-varying disturbances and models of the noise intrinsic to the visual system. We will also consider more sophisticated perceptual tasks designed to involve other channels of visual processing such as those for shape, motion and colour as well as more advanced stages of visual processing including discrimination and identification tasks.
