Superconducting devices such as magnet energy storage are now being developed for electrical power management, and the possibility therefore arises of locating the associated power electronic control equipment inside the cryostat with the superconducting components. The operation of power devices and complete power electronic systems at cryogenic temperatures is not well understood, however it would appear that significant improvements in efficiency ma be achieved. The overall aims of this research are to examine the benefits of operating the main power device families at cryogenic temperatures, to develop theoretical understanding of the low temperature effects within the devices, and to devise and evaluate cryogenic power electronic systems for applications electricity supply networks.
