Summary on Grant Application Form
This project aims to establish, using transmission electron microscopy, an improved understanding of the rich variety of microstructural features in thermally sprayed coatings. These coatings are highly inhomogeneous and anisotropic since some 103 particles are deposited per mm2 A novel aspect will be the application of a new generation of mechanical polishing and ion milling tools to electron transparent sample preparation. Originally developed for the semiconductor industry, these tools will facilitate the preparation of samples either with very large electron-transparent areas (hundreds of pmt) or from specific sites of interest. The work will address sample preparation methodologies and apply them to specific unresolved aspects of microstructure formation.
