Summary on Grant Application Form
The objective of this project, conducted in the context of the OSDA-LINK Scheme, is to develop new laser-based machine technology capable of high speed micro-drilling of dielectric substrates for use in electronics manufacturing. The core of the proposal is the exploitation of recent HWU laser research which has opened the door to new commercial laser device technology with performance features which offer potential for significant production performance advantages over currently-available technology for applications in high speed drilling of materials at the core of modern electronics manufacture. The university will partner with a laser manufacturing company, (Rofin-Sinar UK Ltd), a laser-machine builder for electronics manufacture (Exitech Ltd) and a ceramic substrate manufacturer (CoorsTek Ltd). The aim is for the partners to develop jointly new PCB drilling machines which incorporate new industrial laser products, as well as facilitating new and improved manufacturing processes. The HWU contribution centres on underpinning research and technology transfer relating on new high peak power short pulse lasers demonstrated on a recently-completed EPSRC grant. We will also contribute to laser material interaction research and optical system design .
