The project focuses on a field emission device (FED) design that employs a novel cold cathode emitter structure that uses synthetic diamond along with related materials as the 'active' electron emitting material. A non-standard deposition technique involving use of ink jet printing technology, researched by Smiths, will be developed further by the University of Bath as the means to pattern diamond particle layers into pixel emitter cathode array structures. Nanoparticle diamond powder is difficult to process into an emissive material by conventional doping methods. Thus, the Diamond Group at Bristol will undertake research and material characterisation to develop the laser-induced diamond doping and activation treatments to enable large arrays of diamond pixel emitters to be processed. Bristol will also research: novel encapsulation techniques and material processing of candidate phosphors to improve low voltage performance, and establish the physical nature and electronic properties of the interfaces between material layers; the development of a suitable vacuum packaging solution to enable the FED components to be assembled to operate in a stable, reproducible ambient environment; and novel uses of secondary getter materials.
